Just finished reading...

Ghouls, ghouls, ghouls (Ghost Hunter #5) by Victoria Laurie.*

Peter Gophner (aka, Gopher) the producer of M.J. Holliday's new cable television show Ghoul Getters, has found the perfect location. Dunlow Castle in Ireland, built on a rock that's only accessible via a causeway at low tide, is believed to be haunted by a malevolent phantom that is guarding a treasure of Spanish doubloons. This phantom has supposedly killed more than one disbelieving gold-hunter.

What happens when they actually arrive at the castle is classic. The phantom fills its victim's mind with the person's greatest fears, and there are multiple scenes where M.J. or one of her crew are reduced to cowering and sobbing, despite their ghost-repellent magnetic spikes.

Laurie's main characters (Heath, M.J., Gopher and Gilley) are well realized, but the minor ones are rather flat. Still, his is an enjoyable book, though more humourous than frightening, especially when researcher Gilley's response to fear is eating, and often talking through a mouthful of food. However, if you're prone to nightmares, it's probably not suitable bedtime reading.

*FTC Full Disclosure: Many thanks to the publisher, who sent me a copy of the book for review purposes.
