A Touch of Gold (Missing Pieces #2) by Joyce and Jim Lavene.*

As Dae O'Donnell, mayor of Duck, North Carolina, walks away from the Duck Historical Museum one afternoon, she knocked to the ground by an explosion. She ends up in the hospital overnight, but Max Caudle, the director of the museum is killed by what turned out to be a cannonball.

While Dae is in the hospital she discovers that her gift of finding things has been drastically enhanced: when she touches a gold coin that she'd picked up at the museum, she's overwhelmed by everything that happened to the coin since it was made. She soon realizes that this now occurs whenever she touches something, and manages to deal with it by donning gloves and telling people her hands were injured in the explosion.

But she can't wear gloves forever, and she soon realizes that her newfound ability can be of use in finding out what happened to Max.

The main characters in the story are appealing and well-drawn, but some of the peripheral ones are a bit flat. Still, this is an absorbing and entertaining mystery for those who like just a touch of the paranormal.
