The Girl in the Green Raincoat by Laura Lippman.*
This charming novella is an homage to Josphine Tey's The Daughter of Time and the classic Hitchcock movie Rear Window.
Tess Monaghan, on enforced bed rest for the final two months of her pregnancy, is ensconced on a day-bed in her winterized sun porch. Equipped with binoculars, she people-watches in the park outside her window. One day she spots a young woman walking her Italian greyhound, catching her eye because they are clad in matching green raincoats.
A few days later, she sees the dog running through the park alone, trailing its leash. Certain that the young woman is in trouble, Tess decides to track her down. What she finds, with the help of Crow, Whitney and her new employee Mrs.
Blossom, is a husband who reeks of guilt.
Along with the mystery are several love stories: that of Tess's parents, Mrs. Blossom and her husband's, and her own with Crow.
This lovely little story (originally published as a serial in the New York Times) left this reader longing for another Tess Monaghan novel!
