National Chronic Illness Awareness Week

Yes, that's this week, September 13 through 19.

The effects of having a chronic illness* were brought home to me last week, when I had to call in to work. Luckily, I can just say I'm ill; how would it sound if I called in "tired"? Yup, I was tired.

No big deal, you say? I was fatigued to the point of barely being able to make it back up the stairs to bed after breakfast. I slept most of Thursday morning, came downstairs for lunch and then curled up on the couch and slept some more. After rousing myself enough to heat up some soup and make sandwiches for our dinner, I was back in bed by 10:00 p.m.

Friday was pretty much the same, but I was hopeful that I'd be able to enjoy my weekend, going to a book launch and then a football game. However, I was awakened on Saturday morning by chest pains, and though I still hoped for a good day, I was disappointed.

It's not always like this. In fact, it's seldom like this. The previous few weeks I was as energetic and productive as anyone else. Episodes like last week's happen every few months, and mostly serve to make me realize that I need to slow down and listen to my body.

Which, come to think of it, we should all do.

*Just for the record, I have systemic lupus erythematosus, with the complication of heart problems.

  1. Not a fun weekend at all. Hope it will be another VERY long time before you do that again!

  2. Oh! Another SLE'er! I so relate--sometimes, that's just the way it is and it's okay to do what you need to do to take it easy.
