Just finished reading...

Formula for Murder by Diana Orgain.*

On the way to get Christmas photos of baby Laurie, aspiring private investigator Kate Connelly's is hit from behind by a silver SUV, which then drives off. One of the good Samaritans who comes to her aid learns that the car belongs to the French consulate, but when Kate and her husband Jim approach them, they claim diplomatic immunity.

On their way out of the consulate, Kate and Jim spot two television reporters which piques Kate's always active curiosity. A few days later one of the reporters is found dead in Golden Gate Park, and she wonders if there is some connection to the consulate. So when her best friend Paula tells her she's been invited to a Christmas party there, Kate eagerly agrees to be her "date".

Kate is a fantastic protagonist. Despite the fact that she's decided that being a P.I. is the perfect job for a woman with a newborn (she can bring Laurie with her on stakeouts and interviews) she's a fairly realistic character who worries about finances, child-care, her post-partum weight and getting through her daily to-do list.

Each chapter begins with one of these amusing lists, with the few items that are done crossed out, and the many uncompleted items changed to something more feasible. This is an enjoyable, funny book that you'll want to read right through once you've started it.

Stay tuned tomorrow for Diana's own version of one of Kate's to-do lists!

*FTC Full Disclosure: Many thanks to the publisher, who sent me a copy of the book for review purposes.
